Materials:

    1) paper

    2) pencils

    3) crayons

Pre-activity preparation:

Gather notebook paper to pass out to the students later.

Transition:

The students will work at their desks individually.

Establishing set/Motivation/Introduction:

Introduce a “Trip Through the Solar System” activity.

Learning Experiences/ Presentation/Procedure:

    1) Introduce activity to the students. “

Write a story about a trip through the solar system

    .”

    2) Give the students the criteria (must be at least half a page long).

    3) Pass out notebook paper to the students.

    4) Help the students with the events, starting from the sun and continuing in order through the rest of the planets.

    5) Start the paper off “

I took a trip through the solar system…

” and let them continue on from there.

    6) Help students decide how long a trip through the solar system would take.

    7) Allow students time to work by themselves on the paper (30 minutes…). This is when it is okay for the students to come and ask for help individually.

    8) When the students are finished writing, have them draw an illustration for their story on the back of the paper.

    9) Read each student’s story to themselves and check the drawings to make sure they make sense.

    10) The next day each student will read their story and show their illustration to the class.

Closure:

Discuss how long an actual trip through the solar system would take (about 72 years).
