Title - The Great Gatsby, Character Analysis
By - Cristina Guzman
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 9-12
The Great Gatsby
by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Instructions:
The students will read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and create a character description and analysis. The students will look for any clues that will help them determine where the characters came from according to the novel, what they like to do, what type of a personality they have, etc. The character descriptions should include all the details necessary to depict each character on construction or blank paper. After the drawings have been created for each character, the short analysis should be applied under the illustration for easy future access. Then, the students will watch the movie The Great Gatsby, and view the actors that have been chosen to fulfill the role for each character. The students will then compare the movie's interpretation of the character to their own interpretation based on details they acquired from the novel. Then, the students should see if the description given by the book inspired their imagination and enhanced their portrayal of the characters.
Purpose:
The purpose of creating a picture and analysis for the characters in The Great Gatsby is to see if the students can interpret the description the author applies to the characters. If the students are capable of doing a good job, then, that means that they have a good imagination. The purpose of reading books is to travel the world without having to actually go. Imagination is one key principle needed to learn and expand mental growth.
Supplies:
