Title - Sentence Sense
By - Charmaine Neo-Luntok
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 4-8

Objective : To identify the parts of the sentence and evaluate sentences for sense.

Presentation and Discussion:

1. Teacher reviews the class on the definition and the basic parts of a sentence: the subject(Noun Phrase) and the predicate (Verb Phrase).

2. She asks the class how to identify these two parts using two important questions: Who/What is being talked about? (Subject ) and What is said about who/what? (Predicate )

3. She emphasizes that sentence sense is essential in writing and speaking.

4. The class is divided into two groups. All members of one group will think of a noun phrase and the other group will think of a verb phrase. e.g. The little brown dog, A wise young teacher, sleeps under the tree, flies out of the window...

5. Randomly, the teacher calls a member from each group to orally give his/her Noun Phrase or Verb Phrase. The purpose of this is to find a match that will create a sensible sentence. If the match is not sensible, the class will discuss why.

6. The game continues and the teacher must acknowledge the correct matches by writing the sentences on the board.

7. After all students had given their phrases, teacher will ask volunteers to round up the activity by making a generalization about sensible sentences.

Homework:

Cut out 5 headlines from the newspapers and paste them on a bond paper. Write a reaction about each headline on sentence sense.
