Objective (purpose):

    To comprehend stories being read aloud and to practice writing sentences on a topic that was just read about.

Introduction:

    “Boys and girls, today we are going to learn about the dinosaur called the Tyrannosaurus rex. (Show students pictures of the T-rex.) We are going to read a book about this dinosaur and then we are going to practice writing sentences.”

Explanation/Modeling:

    “The book I am going to read to you is called

    Tyrannosaurus rex

    .” Explain what a cover page, title page, author, and illustrator are. Read the book emphasizing and repeating important details and asking the students questions to check for comprehension.

Method of Explanation:

    Now, ask the students to tell you in complete sentences, what they learned about the dinosaur T-rex. Write all of their examples on the board, reminding them about capital letters, spaces, and periods. Then, ask the students to go back to their tables. Give them a T-rex coloring page. Have them write three sentences on the back of the paper and then color the T-rex.

Learning Activities/Reinforcement and Individual Assessment:

    Walk around the room helping students who need help, answering questions, and making sure everybody understands the assignment and is behaving.

Closure:

    “Today we learned about the Tyrannosaurus rex and now we know that he was a very dangerous dinosaur and that it is good they do not exist anymore.”

Relevancy:

    “Children who know how to read and write sentences are very smart. Now you are going to be able to write letters to your friends, teacher, and parents and you can read to them too.”
