Title - "I Can Adapt"
By - Grace Limbaugh
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Science, Computers / Internet
Grade Level - 3-6
The teacher will guide students in discovering information in books and on the web about animals that have adapted in strange ways to their habitats. A great site called Kratt's Creatures at www.pbs.org/kratts/ contains such animals and their adaptations. The class will discuss the animals they find and their "oddities."
From the books and/or internet, the students will choose a creature they find particularly interesting and appealing to them. This is because (as the instructor will explain) they will write a paper on the creature and combine its characteristics with their own. For instance, if a student is interested in having the ability to "hide" in his surroundings, he might choose the elusive chameleon. A story involving a skunk and its ability to use its "stinky" defense mechanism might be just the creature that a student with a need for "sweet revenge" could use.
An example of the beginning of a story might be: "One morning I awoke to find that I had the ability to stretch my neck as long as a giraffe's. It was amazing how I could reach the top of the house..."
