Cam Jansen and the Missing Dinosaur Bones

BEFORE READING ACTIVITIES
    1. Motivation: Tap into the student's background knowledge by asking them what they know about:
      Dinosaurs
      Museums
      Field Trips
      Fossils

    2. Prediction Activity:

      Objective: TSW predict what the story, Cam Jansen and The Mystery of the Dinosaur Bones will be about.

      Activity:
        1. Handout the book to each student.
        2. Review how to skim a book for details by explaining to the students to carefully look at the cover, illustrations, and chapter headings.
        3. Complete "Think It Over" worksheet.

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities.

      Assessment: Correction of worksheet and oral responses

    3. Vocabulary Activity:

      Objective: TSW pronounce and define the following words: Plaster of Paris, solar, photographic, mental, cuffs, prehistoric, pickax, combination, museum, thread, exhibit, scientist, illustration and dinosaur.

      Activity:
        1. Write each word on the board.
        2. Review the pronunciation of each word and have the students repeat.
        3. Utilize a dictionary to define each word.
        4. Write each word on the vocab worksheet in purple folder.
        5. Distribute dinosaur cut outs and have each student make flashcards for their words.

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities; dinosaur cut outs; dictionaries.

      Assessment: Oral pronunciation of vocabulary words, correction of vocabulary definition and vocabulary quiz.

    4. KWL Activity:

      Objective: TSW complete the KW of a KWL chart in order to develop a purpose for reading.

      Activity:
        1. Utilizing chart paper complete a KWL chart on the story.
        2. Have each student participate n the activity by orally discussing what they Know and what they Want to learn.
        3. Utilize oral responses to complete the first 2 columns of the chart.
        4. Review for understanding and give the students a purpose for wanting to read this story.

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities; Chart paper; marker.

      Assessment: Oral responses
DURING READING ACTIVITIES
    1. Oral Reading:

      Objective: TSW enhance their fluency and oral reading abilities by orally reading for one minute without making more than three errors on three consecutive trials.

      Activity:
        1. Begin by reviewing vocabulary and KWL chart each day.
        2. Have each student orally read for one minute. While the student is reading keep track of errors and # of words read in a minute.
        3. Track student's progress on individual fluency charts.
        4. Once the chapter is complete have students graph their individual progress onto charts in folders.

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities; Teachers fluency charts; timer.

      Assessment: Progress monitoring of oral fluency by student and teacher.

    2. Pair Share Reading:

      Objective: TSW enhance their fluency and oral reading abilities by orally reading to their partners.

      Activity:
        1. Each day split the students into pairs and re-read chapter for understanding.
        3. Have students write down questions they may have about the chapter into their notebooks.
        2. Once completed return to group for discussion.

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities.

      Assessment: Peer/ student self-monitoring.
AFTER READING ACTIVITIES
    1. Story Retelling:

      Objective: TSW retell each chapter in their own words with 90% accuracy.

      Activity:
        1. Each student will be given an opportunity to participate in to contribute to the retelling of each chapter.
        2. The teacher will provide feedback to oral responses.

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities.

      Assessment: Oral responses

    2. Comprehension Activities:

      Objective: TSW comprehend each chapter by answering 9 out of 10 inferential and factual questions 90% of the time.

      Activity:
        1. Question It Worksheet
        2. Oral discussion
        3. Outlining and taking notes of each chapter.
        4. Referring back to KWL chart for completion.
        5. Story Mapping
        6. 5 minute write

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities.

      Assessment: Oral and written responses

    3. Characters:

      Objective: TSW identify the main characters and compare it to themselves.

      Activity:
        1. Review main characters orally.
        2. Create puppets of each character.
        3. Complete a character map in folder.
        4. Complete a comparison map.

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities.

      Assessment: Oral and written responses; character quiz

    4. Story Elements

      Objective: TSW identify characters, setting, conflict and resolution of the story with 75% accuracy.

      Activity:
        1. Review comprehension questions.
        2. Discussion
        3. Review definitions of objectives
        4. Complete story map independently

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities.

      Assessment: Written responses and Test
LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITIES
    In this story there are a variety of language arts activities that can be associated with it.

    Objective: TSW be able to identify and complete activities related to the following concepts:
      Compound words
      Homophones
      Classifying words
      Defining words

    Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities.

    Assessment: Correction of worksheets and language arts test

    Writing Activity:

      Objective: TSW be able to write a friendly letter describing what they liked or didn't like about the story with accuracy related to individual IEP goals.

      Activity:
        1. Teach steps for writing a friendly letter.
        2. Provide an example on the Overhead projector.
        3. Complete sloppy copy and submit for corrections.
        4. Complete final copy on the computer.

      Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities.

      Assessment: Writing rubric

INTERNET CONNECTION ACTIVITIES - Comprehension
    Objective: TSW enhance their comprehension abilities by answering questions related to Coelophysis on the Internet with 85% accuracy.

    Activity:
      1. Distribute Internet worksheet.
      2. Review steps for manipulating the computer.
      3. Have students work in small groups to answer questions.
      4. Hand in worksheet with all necessary information.

    Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities; Internet worksheet with questions.

    Assessment: Correction of worksheet
INTERNET CONNECTION ACTIVITIES - Research
    Objective: TSW enhance their research abilities by completing a comprehensive search on a dinosaur of choice, answering a variety of questions and completing a paper with no more than three prompts for each step.

    Activity:
      1. Distribute Internet assignment.
      2. Review steps for manipulating the computer.
      3. Have students work individually to research a dinosaur of choice.
      4. Answer all questions.
      5. Write a paper utilizing information from worksheet and research.

    Materials: Individual Purple reading folders which include the book, worksheets, fluency charts and any materials needed to complete daily activities; Internet worksheet with questions; access to the internet

    Assessment: Rubric for paper; Internet research
