Title - Nature Walk Journaling
By - Mrs. Kathleen Wild
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Science, Art
Grade Level - 5-12

Materials needed:
    1. A notebook or a bound journal.

    2. A pencil or a pen.

    3. Colored pencils.

    4. A bird identification book or tree, leaf and plant identification book may also be very helpful.

    5. Ziplock storage freezer bags.

    6. A shoe box, plastic wrap, and tape or glue for the shadow box.
Directions:
    1. Have the students and the teacher choose a place to go on a nature hike or walk. Parks are very nice for this project or even camping sites.

    2. As the students are walking, have them write and draw what they see and what sounds they hear.

    3. If the students have identification books with them, they can also identify what they see if they do not know the name.

    4. Using the freezer bags, have them collect interesting items such as leaves, stones, and moss - whatever interests them - in small quantities with respect to the park.

    5. When they get back to the classroom, they can also make a shadow box to display their items. This can be done as a class or each student can make their own shadow box and present it to the class.

    6. When the students return to the classroom, they can choose spelling words from their nature hike.

    7. Students can also write sentences or paragraphs about their hiking experience.

Have fun and enjoy the great outdoors!
