Title – Persuading with Commercials

By – Michelle Miller

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Secondary Subjects – Social Studies

Grade Level – 6-7

This project is a great way to teach about persuasion and propaganda. It allows students to be more active in the lesson. It puts students in a commercial and helps them to understand how persuasion works.

Day 1: Tell the students to pick a product, bring it in, and think of how they would improve it.

Day 2: Every student will have a product and will make a commercial on a recorded VHS or a blank cassette advertising their unique product.

Day 3: Give everyone a list of persuasive words to use in their commercials. Give examples of how it should be. Give the students a week and a half to present their advertisement in front of the class.

Last Day: All students present their advertisements in front of their classmates. Afterwards everyone answers the questions, “How do advertisements influence peoples lives? How do they influence your life?”

This project was a great success.
