Learning Research Skills

GRADE LEVEL: SECOND GRADE
Michigan State Benchmark: TWL generate questions about important issues or topics about which they are curious, identify and use resources; organize and interpret information and develop and present conclusions.
Local Objectives: TWL ask questions, identify resources, organize and present conclusions about a topic or issue.
STRATEGIES:
a) give students a teacher selected topic in science or social studies (ie. bears, trees, Michigan)
b) pair students in groups of 2-3.
c) generate a list of Things Students Know about the topic.
d) ask students what they want to learn about the topic.
e) generate a list of possible resources for the students to look up answers to their questions.
f) allow students to take time to find answers and take notes on the topic.
g) student will then use a web to organize their information.
h) using their web, students will then generate a report using visuals, texts, and whatever the teacher feels is important.
i) students will verbally share their reports with the class.
ASSESSMENT: (assign the number according to the below rubric)
1= no topic was stated, no research was used, no web present and
no final report was given.
2= a topic was stated, some research was used, some type of web
was attempted and a final report was attempted.
3= a topic was stated, some research was used, a web was used
to organize data and a final report was given.
4= a topic was stated, lots of research was used, a web was
used to organize the date and a final report was given.
