Title - Shared Reading of Tall Tales
By - Debbie Haren
Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 2-4

Precipatory:

We have learned many new Tall Tales stories and some very exciting tales. I would like to think back at all the tall tales you have read and think about why people told tall tales.
Examples of the stories we have read are:
The Princess and the Golden Shoe
Pecos Bill
Johnny Appleseed
The Emperor and the Kite
Paul Bunyan and the Big Blue Ox

Discussion:
Men and women on the frontier did not have T.V.'s and telephones. Stories were a way to entertain people. Many stories were told to the children. The children did not have many books because they were very expensive and hard to find. Almost everything was pasted down from one person to another by word of mouth. The children would sit by the campfire and listen to different people tell stories until it was time to go to sleep.

Writing:

Draw a picture of a frontier campsite and people sitting around the fire telling stories. Write in your journal what you think it would be like to live on the frontier. Would it be exciting scary? Do you think you would have liked being a kid on the frontier or not? Why? Would you be able to survive without Nintendo???
