A unit on Public Speaking
First, Ask the students to write a tongue twister on an index card. They may write more than one if they wish. Then put names in a hat or, what I do is I put each students name on a popsicle stick and then put it in a jar. Draw names, and have the selected student come up and choose a tongue twister (or you may give them one) and say it one time slow, then say it 5 times fast. After every one is done, ask the students what did they think was the hardest to say?
The next day, ask students to pick a hobby or a favorite recipe. Tell them that they should be able to demonstrate it. Then explain about a demonstration speech-The students pick a topic that they can demonstrate. Then they take turns demonstrating their topic. The average prep time is about a week to a week and a half, but you can have less or more. Give them a self evaluation sheet where they grade themselves on composure, volume, etc. This introduces public speaking.
After its all done, ask the students the following questions;
~ Did you like this? Why or why not?
~ Did you think this was easy? Why or Why not?
~ Would you do this again?
~ Why did you pick your topic?
~ Do you regret picking this topic? Why or Why not?
