Title - Process Analysis Pre-Writing Activity
By - Sandy Sinden
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts
Grade Level - Grade 9
This is a great way to teach students how to organize
thoughts and use specific language.
Have the students write "recipes" how to make peanut butter sandwiches. Tell them that they have three things to start with: a jar of peanut butter, a knife
and a loaf of bread.
Collect the recipes.
The next day, come to class with a jar of peanut butter, a couple of loaves of bread and a butter knife.
Ask for volunteers. Have one student read another's
recipe and have a second student follow the directions
exactly.
Inevitably, the students will struggle with directions
such as "Put peanut butter on bread" or "Scoop out some
peanut butter".
The students love this activity.
Once you have run out of volunteers, assign a process
analysis writing such as "how to tie your shoes" etc.
As a special note, make sure that there are no allergies to peanuts in your class beforehand. In fifteen years of teaching this has happened once and I simply substituted cheese whiz for peanut butter.
