Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts
Grade Level - 9-12
This is a fun group activity that lasts 2-3 days in a 50-minute class.
Materials: A few pages from a novel
highlighters
markers
adding machine tape
butcher paper
Copy of few pages from a popular novel and pass it out to each of your students. Give your students about 20-25 minutes to skim through the pages and highlight any phrases that catch their eye. They should have about 5-7 phrases each. Once they have their phrases, give them long sections of adding machine tape and a marker. Have them copy their phrases onto strips of adding machine tape.
Next, put them into groups of 4 or 5. Together they lay their strips on the floor. As a group they work together to come up with a poem working only with the strips they have chosen. The strips can not be altered in any way.
When they are finished, they can tape or glue their poem onto a large piece of construction paper.
If you like you can have them present their poem to the class or post them around our room for everyone to read.
