Title - Odes to my Classroom
By - Maria Marrero
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Other
Grade Level - 2-6
This is a good end of year lesson to integrate poetry into language arts. I read aloud Odes by Pablo Neruda, Odas Elementales, and Gary Soto to my Spanish bilingual students. We talk about giving compliments to objects and things. I make a template that younger students have to fill in:
Oh, my bilingual classroom
My classroom is ___________
There are ___________
I learn _____________
and speak ____________
The classroom is not so ________ as a __________
and it is not _________
but it is _________
Oh, my bilingual classroom!
For older students I talk about hyperbole, "an exaggerated compliment."
The students write their odes in both languages.
