Title - The Lost Button
By - Kristi
Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - Grade 1-2
This lesson goes along with Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel and the story A Lost Button which is located in it on page 28.
After the completion of this lesson students will be able to identify an object after being given the description.
Before the lesson the teacher needs to prepare a enlarged replica of Toad's jacket with one missing button and place it on the board. Also you will need to have one button for every child in your classroom. Be sure that one of the buttons fit the description of the button which Toad loses in the story. (white, four holes, big, round, and thick)
Each child will need a copy of the story and their button before starting. When everyone has these items the teacher begins to read through the story. AS they come to a characteristic of Toad's button the students should look at their button and decide if it matches. If it does then they keep their button until the next portion of the story. However, if it does not match then they should walk to the board and place their button on to the replica of Toad's jacket. So for example, if the part in the book is read that says Toad's lost button was white and the student's button is white then they keep their button, but if their button is not white then they would walk to the board and place it on Toad's jacket. In the end you will have Toad's decorated jacket which he gave to Frog and there will also be one child remaining with Toad's actual missing button. This student should walk to the board and place the button in the missing button's place.
