Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Vorist
Paper

Show the children the cover of the book and read the title. Discuss what the story might be about. Read the story aloud. After reading discuss the children's own experiences of bad days. Have the children recall the problems that Alexander encountered and discuss what he did that caused those problems (i.e. woke up with gum in his hair, feel asleep with gum in his mouth). Introduce the idea of cause and effect. Explain to the children that every probelm he encountered was because of a choice and an action he made. Discuss what he could of done for each problem to stop it. Model a letter. The children will then create their own letters of advice on how he could have a better day.
The children love it!
