Title – Creative Writing using Colors and Adjectives

New York State Standards:

    ELA 2

Instructional Objective:

    Student will be able to use adjectives for creative writing.

Motivation:

    Bring in a can of bright pink paint and ask the students to describe how the color makes them feel (e.g., it makes me feel happy).

Materials/ Resources Needed:


  • All the Colors of the Earth

    by Sheila Hamanaka
  • Can of pink paint
  • Chalkboard
  • Chalk
  • Paper
  • Pencils

Procedure:

  • Read the book

    All the Colors of the Earth

    to the class.
  • While reading the book, point out the metaphors. For example, after reading “roaring brown” and “whispering gold,” ask the students, “Do browns really roar?” or “Do golds really whisper?”

Modeling:

  • Have the students write a poem using colors.
  • Provide a list of adjectives on the chalkboard (i.e., cheerful, lonely, friendly, brave, etc.) for the students to use in their poems.

Guided Practice:

    Ask the students to think about a few colors and to try to use some of the provided adjectives to describe these colors.

Independent Practice:

    The students will rewrite their poem using adjectives to describe all of their colors.

Closure:

    The students will share their poems in a small group.

Follow-Up:

  • For homework, the students will be asked to think of other ways they can use adjectives to describe words.
  • They will write a story in which adjectives are used to describe words (e.g., they might write “the boy walked down the lonely street”) and turn it into class the next day.
