Celebrate the poetry genre by connecting novels with published and original poetry. Here are a few suggestions to consider:

While reading a novel, ask students to find a published poem for each chapter which would represent the event(s), the theme(s), or the character(s) in the chapter. This could also be combined with original poetry written by the student. One group might be assigned to focus on events only; another on character; another on themes. Different students or groups would then have a specific Poetry "Novel" Connection book that the student or the group could present.

At the end of the novel unit, ask students to share in group the Poetry "Novel". As a whole class activity, students could make display boards showcasing the poems they found and/or created to connect with the novel. As an oral activity, students could read aloud the poetry they found/created for the novel connection.

An example I have used for one class is while reading WISH YOU WELL by David Baldacci, my student teams were assigned a) Virginia (the setting) and geographical details b) Characters c) Themes (per chapter)
d) Visual Details from each chapter.

While reading, students kept chapter Post-it notes for their assigned subject.

One day a week was planned for library research in the poetry section. Poems were collected and documented.

Some students asked if they could add illustrations to the poem(s) they found. This added to the final published book or display.

After all poems were collected and documented, the groups selected to publish in book form or display form.

Along with each poem, the student or group had to decide how to explain the connection each poem had with the novel chapters. This could be a documented page summary. It could be a group compilation explaining the connection. Using student suggestions helped to give ownership to the project.

Celebrate poetry month or bring poetry to your classroom by connecting great novels with the wonderful world of poetry. Two genres connected together to give better insight into the reading experience.
