By – Gera

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Secondary Subjects -

Grade Level – 5-7

Provide VERB vocabulary list of 10 to 20 words.

Define: Metaphor

Focus: Our class is an Einstein of potential.

Our class is batting 380 and higher.

1) Each student will list 5 of their favorite words
(nouns, adjectives, etc.)

2) Each student will begin a sentence with their first
word and the verb is + noun + a high level verb.

Ex: Beautiful is a butterfly fluttering.

Skateboarding is Tarzan flying through the
trees.

3) Each student will finish writing metaphors for the
remaining 4 of their favorite words.

4) Students share their metaphors (groups or use
overhead projector).

5) Students are ready to apply this knowledge to the
list of verbs.

Ex: Mountainous: Mountainous is an ant
climbing a block of
ice.

Ex: exacerbate: Exacerbate is throwing
gasoline on a burning
building.

Ex.: corroborate: Corroborate is a U.S.
Olympic basketball team
playing together for the
gold medal.

This is a great way to introduce a poetry unit as well.
Good luck.
