Title - Swat Game
By - Diane Price
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Multidisciplinary
Grade Level - K-12
Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to help children learn vocabulary words and their definitions.

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
1. Recognize vocabulary words.
2. Pronounce and spell vocabulary words.
3. Match vocabulary words with their definitions.

Resource/Materials:
Wall Board, dry erase markers, two (2) fly swatters,
4X6 white, blank cards, list of vocabulary words

Activities and Procedures:
1. List each vocabulary word on a 4X6 card.
Make two identical sets of vocabulary word cards.
2. Tape the cards to the wall board. Tape a set of cards on the left and tape an identical set of cards on the right.
3. Divide the class into two teams.
4. One student from each team approaches and faces the board. Each student picks up a fly swatter.
5. The teacher calls out a definition and the first student to successfully locate and SWAT the matching vocabulary word wins a point for their team.
6. These two students sit down and the next two students approach the board and face the vocabulary cards. Continue to play the game, while keeping score until all vocabulary definitions have been called out. Total the points for each team. Announce the winning team.

Tying it all together:
The students are excited and work to help their teams win while learning the vocabulary words and definitions. This game can easily be adapted to fit other learning situations. Use the activity as an introduction, reinforcement, or review of vocabulary words.
