Title - Jack Be Nimble
By - Renee Dye
Subject - Language Arts, Multidisciplinary
Grade Level - 1-2

Objective: To use the fun in nursery rhymes to teach about candles. To pull cognitive (language arts), gross motor (physical education / health), and art out of one nursery rhyme.

Material: Toilet Paper Rolls (enough for every child)
Construction Paper
Clear Tape
Markers
Paint
Sponges
Birthday Candles
Table Candles

Procedure: Cognitive / My Birthday Candles
My mother made a birthday cake,
She says it is for me.
She put six candles on top
For everyone to see.
When I have a party
This is what I'll do-
I'll make a wish and blow real hard
And hope one wish comes true.

Gross Motor / Have them get in a circle. Place a candle in the middle of the circle. Start chanting the nursery rhyme Jack Be Nimble. As you go around the circle substitute each child's name for Jack and have them jump the candle stick.

Austin be nimble
Austin be quick
Austin jumped over the candlestick

Art / Give each child paint or markers and a half of a piece of construction paper. Give them a toilet paper roll and some tape. After they paint their paper let them tape it to the paper roll. Stuff the roll with tissue paper or crate paper to make a candle.

Observation: Give each child a piece of paper and crayons. Ask them to draw a candle and tell you what they would use it for.

Follow Up: Give each child a pre-baked cup cake, some icing, sprinkles, and candles. Let them decorate the cupcake. Have them sing:
Happy Good Day To You
Happy Good Day We Love You
Happy Good Day To You
