Title - Learning to write Narratives (showing not telling)
By - Jamie Rhodes
Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 3-4
Begin the lesson by writing some sentences like the following on the board or overhead: The man is nice. My mom is short. Have students read these sentences. Ask the students to create a picture of each sentence in their mind. Remind students that a good detailed sentence can be visually created in their mind as well as on paper. Now have students help to create more vivid sentences (showing sentences) to replace the ones on the board (telling sentences). Example: The man bought Chase another ice cream after his was stolen by the brown dog. or Dad can change the light bulb in the ceiling fan, but Mom must stand on a chair. Group students and have them create more showing sentences. For homework have each student create a paragraph that has at least three showing sentences. You can either give a topic or have them choose their own. I have found it is easier to give a topic. Option: have students to illustrate other students paragraph on the next day.
