Title - Learning to write Narratives (explaining yourself in a paragraph)
By - Jamie Rhodes
Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 3-4
Help students to create more detailed paragraphs or stories by teaching them to explain their main ideas. First, give students a few topic sentences. Example: I like to play sports. I love to watch television. I wish that I could be a prince or princess. Next, have students create a paragraph that supports the topic sentence. Create one on the board, then ask them to create theirs. Allow students time to complete this task. Ask them to read their paragraphs aloud so that their peers can help you critique their work. Make sure that students kept to the topic and that their supporting sentences related to the topic sentence. This is an example of a paragraph in my classroom: I had a bad day. I got into trouble at school. I missed the bus. When I got home my brother told on me for not feeding the dog. I don't want to repeat it again. Assign students to create two paragraphs that expresses a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
