By - Rena
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 3-4
Lesson Plan Title: Homophones
Objectives: The student will be able to
- define a homophone
- utilize the correct homophone in sentence when given a choice
- write grammatically correct sentences with homophones
Materials: homophone word cards, computers with online access, paper and pencil
Procedures:
- Introduction: Display or write the word Homophones. Tell the students that they will be detectives and will determine how certain words known as homophones are the same and different.
- Using the Manatee homophone Bulletin Board Webpage (http://www.manatee.k12.fl.us/sites/elementary/palmasola/hom7.htm) download and copy the pictures and sentences to display to the class. With probing questions, have students state how the words are the same and how they are different. Label these words as homophones.
- Using word cards, display other homophones. Have students state the meanings of each one. To check meanings, show the class the Cooper webpage (http://www.cooper.com/homophonezone/) and demonstrate how they can check the meaning of the given words. Also, reinforce the definition of homophone by asking questions such as how do you know this is a homophone.
- For guided practice, utilize some of the words in sentences. Using one of the online activities of the manatee webpage, complete activity #1. Have students volunteer putting some of the words in sentences. Write the sentences on the board or overhead.
- Independent Practice: Have the class work in groups of 2 and complete the online activities from http://www.manatee.k12.fl.us/sites/elementary/palmasola/ps4glehomy.htm. Remind the students that they can use Cooper Homophone Zone if they need a definition.
6. Using the Cooper website if necessary, pick 5 word pairs and write grammatically correct sentences. These sentences will be handed in and evaluated.
