Title - Phrase-Cued Text Practice

Subject Area:
    Reading Fluency
I. Objective:
    The student will read with proper phrasing, intonation, and expression in chunked text.
II. Materials:
  • Copies of a phrase-cued passage
  • Copies of unmarked passage Pass it On by Bill Neder
  • Audio recorder
  • Blank audio tape
III. Procedures:
    1. Distribute the marked text passage.
    2. Explain the format, and tell student that good phrasing makes reading more interesting and will improve comprehension.
    3. Model reading the marked text aloud as student uses a copy to follow along silently.
    4. Invite student to comment on what was observed about your phrasing and expression.
    5. Repeat steps 3-4 a second time.
    6. Have student use the marked text to read in unison with the teacher.
    7. Encourage student to comment on their own reading and give feedback.
    8. Repeat steps 6-7 a second time.
    9. Distribute the unmarked version of the text.
    10. Ask student to read aloud the passage without the phrases marked.
    11. Tape-record the student's reading and play it back for the student to hear.
    12. Encourage student to comment on their own reading and give feedback.
    13. Repeat steps 10-12 as necessary for student success.
