Adjectives
Melanie Marchand
Purpose: Communicating effectively involves expressing yourself to the best of your ability, in writing and speaking. The adjectives "good" and "bad" are too general to paint a clear picture of what is going on. Adjectives help our language become more colorful and clear and help the person we are communicating with in picturing and understanding what we are trying to express.
Grade: 7
Outcomes:
1. When the students are finished this lesson they will be able to identify adjectives in a sentence.
2. Students will be able to recognize the type of adjective.
Tasks:
1. List some popular movie titles on the board (choose titles with adjectives) and have the students simplify the titles so that they no longer contain the adjectives. For example: James and the Giant Peach becomes James and the Peach.
2. Explain that the adjectives make the sentence more interesting.
3. Define adjective - a word that describes/modifies a noun or pronoun. To make it easier for the students to grasp, divide the adjectives into three categories:
A. Tells what kind:
i) excessive homework
ii) pretty girl
B. Tells how many:
i) three bears
ii) several students
C. Tells which one:
i) that director
ii) this book
4. Assign some work:
a) Write a simple story on the board and leave spaces to accommodate adjectives. Have the kids fill in the adjectives, allowing them to be as creative as possible.
b) Pass out a list of sentences and have the students identify the adjectives, noting what kind of adjective it is.
