Title - Creating A Poem Book
By - Donna Antinarella
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 3-6
This is a great hit with the students. I have done this activity for the past 3 years.
Each student writes a poem. I use the following simple form.
Example:
I like to go swimming,
At the lake,
During the summer,
Because it is so relaxing.
Students write their poem on white paper, cut around it and glue it to the center of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of colored construction paper. They create a border made up of items which directly relate to their poem - in this case beach balls, pails & shovels, etc. An illustration can also be added for color and interest.
These pages are placed back to back and laminated. They are then joined together with metal rings to form a book. Next year's incoming students enjoy reading these books tremendously. By the time it is their turn to create their book, they can't wait, because they know next year's students will be reading it!
