Title - Using Comparing Words

South Carolina Language Arts Standards:
SC 2-3: Reading - Building Vocabulary: The student will use word analysis and vocabulary strategies to read fluently.
SC 2-4: Writing - Developing Written Communications: The student will create written work that has a clear focus, sufficient detail, coherent organization, effective use of voice, and correct use of the conventions of written Standard American English.
Objectives:
The student will be able to identify comparing words in a sentence.
The student will be able to write their own sentence using comparing words.
Assessments:
Informal: Observation Checklist
Formal: Blue Grammar pg. 72
Materials:
The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation by Jane Straus - pg. 72
Notebook Paper
SMARTboard
Procedures:
- The teacher will review comparing words by going over the homework from the night before.
- The teacher will have the students read the students on the homework and then answer the questions including picking out the comparing words.
- The teacher will then ask the students, "What is it like outside?"
- The teacher will list the student's responses on the SMARTboard.
- The teacher will then ask the students, "What was the weather like yesterday?"
- The teacher will list the student's responses on the SMARTboard.
- The teacher will then ask the students for comparing words that compare today to yesterday.
- The teacher will explain that all of these words are describing words too.
- The teacher will then ask the students to come up with one sentence using these comparing words for the weather.
- The students will then complete the Blue Grammar book pg. 72.
Accommodations:
ELL Student: The ELL student will be able to work with a partner in the back of the room to complete her Blue Grammar book page.
Early Finishers:
Early finishers will be allowed to read an Accelerated Reader book or take their AR test as they write their names on the AR list on the board.
