Language Arts Lesson: Comparing and Contrasting The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf with The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig

Grade Level: Third Grade
Objectives:
1.) Using a venn diagram, the students will distinguish the similarities and differences between the story The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, and the story The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig.
Materials: The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, by Eugene Trivias, large sheets of paper, and markers.
Pre-assessment:
The students will demonstrate prior knowledge of the story, The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf through class discussion.
Set:
Begin by drawing a two circle venn diagram on the chalkboard or large sheet of paper. Ask students what they notice about the picture, looking for answers like there are two circles and they are joined together Choose two students to stand up and write one name over one of the circles and the other name over the second circle. Ask student X to name something that he has that student Y does not. For example, if he has glasses on and the other student does not. Write student X's response in his circle. Then ask student Y what he has that student X does not and write that response in his circle. Then ask what they both have and write that in the part of the circle that is joined together. Have students sit down and ask the class who has heard of the story The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf. Ask who the characters were, what happened, what the houses were made of, etc. Tell the class that the story they are going to hear now is a little different. As it is read they should think about what is the same and what is different, as they did with the two students and the venn diagram, about this story from the story of the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf.
Procedures
1.) Read the title of The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, and ask how it is the same and different from the title of the three little pigs. As the story is read, ask questions predicting what will happen next, especially how the pig will knock each house down. Take two or three responses to each question.
2.) When the story is finished, draw another venn diagram on the board labeling one circle, The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf and the other circle The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. Ask questions about what only happened in the three little pigs story and write one answer in that circle. Ask what only happened in the three little wolves story and write one answer in that circle. Then ask what happened in both stories and write one answer in the joint part of the circle.
3.) After putting one answer in each part of the circle to give the students an example of what to do, pair them up to finish the venn diagram on their own with a large sheet of paper.
Closure:
Have the students share their venn diagrams with the rest of the class.
Evaluation:
The students will be assessed on their knowledge of the story The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf through questioning during class discussion. The students should display accurate information about the story. The students will be evaluated on their understanding of the concept of comparing and contrasting the two stories through their ability to create an accurate venn diagram.
Alternative Strategy:
One alternative strategy would be to have the class present a puppet show comparing and contrasting the two stories. Half the class could act out one story and the other half could act out the other story. Then each side could discuss what was different and what was the same between the story they acted out and the story the other half of the class acted out.
Supplemental Activities:
Offering other versions of the three little pigs to compare and contrast such as:
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, The Fourth Little Pig, Three Little Hawaiian Pigs and the Magic Shark, The Three Little Javelinas, and The Three Little Pigs and the Fox: An Appalachian Tale.
