Title - Traveling on the Contraction Train
By - Omaira Rivera
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - K-3
Time - 30 minutes

Procedure:
  • If you have file folders, you can teach contractions.

  • Use a drawing of a train and add as many cars as you desire. Paste the drawings inside of the folders. Write the contractions you desire on each one of the cars, making sure that the words are big enough to read, but small enough to be covered by a small self-adhesive removable note. Post these notes (in any color) over the contractions. If you can, laminate the folder, making sure the self-adhesive notes do not move while you laminate. After you finish, cut the excess paper from the corners of your folder. Then it is time to use a knife to cut very careful three sides of that adhesive note to create a small window flap.

  • Now is time to create the wheels. You can use any color construction paper to make them. There should be two wheels per train car. On each wheel, write the words that later will make the contractions of the train. It will be a great idea to laminate them as well. You can use Velcro to attach the wheels to the cars. Keep the answer sheet in a separate envelope. Ask students to double-check their work.

  • This lesson will help you identify who learned their contractions and who did not. You can use this lesson pairing students or as individuals. You can also use it as an individual assessment.
