Title – Telling a Story with Photo Story 3

Concept/Topic to Teach:

    Constructing a story using photographs.

Standards Addressed:

    §110.6.(b) English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 4 – Knowledge and Skills


      (4) Listening/speaking/culture. The student listens and speaks both to gain and share knowledge of his/her own culture, the culture of others, and the common elements of cultures. The student is expected to:

        (A) connect his/her own experiences, information, insights, and ideas with those of others through

        speaking and listening (4-8)

      (5) Listening/speaking/audiences. The student speaks clearly and appropriately to different audiences for different purposes and occasions. The student is expected to:

        (A) adapt spoken language such as word choice, diction, and usage to the audience, purpose, and occasion (4-8);

        (B) demonstrate effective communications skills that reflect such demands as interviewing, reporting, requesting, and providing information (4-8);

        (C) present dramatic interpretations of experiences, stories, poems, or plays to communicate (4-8);

        (D) use effective rate, volume, pitch, and tone for the audience and setting (4-8)

      (15) Writing/purposes. The student writes for a variety of audiences and purposes, and in a variety of forms. The student is expected to:

      (19) Writing/writing processes. The student selects and uses writing processes for self-initiated and assigned writing. The student is expected to:

        (A) generate ideas and plans for writing by using such prewriting strategies as brainstorming, graphic organizers, notes, and logs (4-8)

      (25) Viewing/representing/production. The student produces visual images, messages, and meanings that communicate with others. The student is expected to:

        (A) select, organize, or produce visuals to complement and extend meanings (4-8); and

        (B) produce communications using technology or appropriate media such as developing a class newspaper, multimedia reports, or video reports (4-8).

General Goals:

    The student will be able to construct a story using Photo Story 3.

Specific Objectives:

    The student will tell a story about themselves using photographs and Photo Story 3.

Required Materials:

  • computer
  • Internet
  • Photo Story 3
  • headset with a microphone
  • scanned photographs or a digital camera to take photographs that will be used in the photo story

Anticipatory Set (Lead In):

    Students will view an example of a photo story produced by their teacher called

    Start your Engines

    .

Procedures:

  1. The teacher will discuss with the students about creating a story and what is needed to create a story.
  2. Students will begin to gather ideas and brainstorm about the story they will tell.
  3. Students will be taught about copyright guidelines.
  4. Students will gather the materials they will utilize in their story.
  5. Students will create and discuss the draft with the teacher.
  6. Students will be given access to a computer that has Internet access, Photo Story 3, and a headset with a microphone.
  7. Students will insert pictures they have collected into the photo story project and begin narration.
  8. Students will present their story to the class.

Plans for Independent Practice:

    Students will receive feedback from their peers and their teacher on how to make their story more entertaining and informative. Therefore, once the student receives this feedback he or she will have the opportunity to revise their story and re-submit it to their teacher.

Closure:

    The students will present their final edited story to the class and discuss the difficulties they encountered when using Photo Story 3.

Assessment Based on Objectives:

    The teacher will use a rubric to evaluate the student’s story, based on the fluidity of the story and the utilization of images the student used to describe their story.

Adaptations (For Students with Learning Disabilities):

    Students will be given the opportunity to have extra assistance from the teacher if he or she is having difficulties completing the project. If the student is unable to complete the project using Photo Story 3, he or she will be allowed to tell their story to the class aloud providing visuals to the class.

Extensions (For Gifted Students):

    Students who are not challenged with the assignment will be encouraged to include animation in the project if time permits.
