Title - Kidspiration Book Vocabulary Concept Maps
By - Nicole
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 2
Content:
This lesson will help students enhance their language skills as well as reading.
Benchmarks:
Students use spoken, written and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (learning, enjoyment, persuasion and the exchange of information).
Learning Resources and Materials:
- Computers with Kidspiration software
- Multiple copies of a book of your choice
Development of Lesson:
Introduction:
First the students will need to read the book for enjoyment. After they read the book, see if any aspects of the book were unclear to them. Give the students time to ask questions.
Methods/Procedures:
Start out by reading through the book as a class and discuss all the different aspects of the book. Then make two vocabulary lists, one of words they already should know and one of words that will be new to them. Depending on the class size, give each student a few words. Using the Kidspiration software, the students can create a concept map; the word being in the middle, to the left a box stemming that says "definition" and a box stemming from that box with the actual definition of the word. Do the same thing for them to use the word in a sentence. Also have the children add pictures on the concept map that relate to each word.
Accommodations/Adaptations:
Depending on the child, you can alter the book and words so that the child is successful.
Assessment/Evaluation:
I would evaluate how much help they need and how accurate the definitions and sentence structures are by creating a rubric.
Closure:
To close out this lesson, the students can share their concept maps with the class, so each child learns about each word.
