Procedures

1. Present the story from the above website to class.
"You are an ESL student at the University of Victoria, living in a rented apartment which is part of your landlady's house. Your landlady is making you very unhappy. She is always spying on you and reading your mail, and she is rude to you when you come home late or bring friends home. She won't allow you to have friends to stay, and she seems to know all your private business. What should you do?"
The website itself is an action maze. You select a solution and the next screen tells you why you are wrong and presents more solutions until you make the correct decision or run out of wrong ones. You do not absolutely need it to complete this lesson, but it helps you to lead a more lively discussion.

2. Students imagine that they meet an evil landlady. How do they solve this problem?

3. Ask the students to work in groups

4. Discuss their solutions.

5. Have each group explain reasons for their solution.

Follow up activities

1. Have class brainstorm students' own problem solving experiences.

2. After sharing students' problem solving experiences, assign students to a debate. One group plays 'landlady or landlord'. The other group plays 'tenant'.

3. Write an assignment to describe how they solve a real life problem.
