Title - My First Memorable Experience
By - Shannon O'Keefe
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 4-5

Content:
    Students will be able to:
  • create a concept map using the software Kidspiration,
  • write a story using the map based on a first experience and
  • write a basic five-paragraph paper including an introduction, three topics and a conclusion
Benchmarks:
W.5 use the writing process to produce a written product
W.6 use various types of writing for specific purposes
W.7 use multiple sources to extend writing
Learning Resources and Materials:
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Computer - Kidspiration software
  • Concept Map (once created)
Development of Lesson:
  • Introduction:
The students will be prepared by reviewing the concepts of what a paragraph is and how to write a paper with a beginning, middle and end. To gain students' attention, I will show them the software Kidspiration and tell them that they will be creating a concept map to brainstorm. Students will be able to connect this to past experiences, because it will show them how to brainstorm in a different way.

  • Methods/Procedures:
Students will be introduced to the idea of writing a paper about their first memorable experience. They will then brainstorm and create a web using the software Kidspiration. I will encourage students to talk to other students to see what they are writing about if they are struggling with the topic. Students will also brainstorm their first memorable experience and then narrow it down to one choice. Students will be directed by the teacher and will also be able to work in groups. Students will have to answer the following: what is the correct paper structure, what, where, when and why was their first experience memorable.

  • Accommodations/Adaptations:
Students will be given an individual conference with the teacher to help guide them in the writing process. They will also be paired with another student so they can make sure their paper includes what it is suppose to. This lesson involves students who are visual, hand-on learners and auditory. Students will receive feedback based on how the students spend their class time and the individual conferences with the teacher. Students will be able to ask questions at anytime and will also be asked questions to make sure they are on the right track.

  • Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on their final product which should include their concept map, rough draft and final copy of the paper. They will have a rubric so they know what is expected of them.

  • Closure:
    • Students will reflect on what they have learned by sharing what they liked about the writing process. They will also share what their first experience was.
    • Based on the experience of this assignment, the teacher will see where improvements can be made based on the student’s reflection.
