GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

• Specific: The specific objective is for students to recognize an effect as something that happens and a cause as the reason something happens. Students will also observe the use of the computer program Wiggle Works.
  
• Broad: Students will locate and apply information for a specific purpose.

CONNECTIONS:

using Wiggle Works. This is related directly to the following Kentucky Learning Goals:

    1.2 Students make sense of the variety of materials they read.

    1.4 Students make sense of the various messages to which they listen.

CONTEXT:

Previously, students have been introduced to the computer program Wiggle Works. Students will be using Wiggle Works to listen to

Willie’s Wonderful Pet

and observe the illustrations in the story. The students will locate events in the story that contain a cause and an effect. The major focus of the unit is for students to apply knowledge of how a passage is organized: patterns, cause and effect, comparison, contrast and sequencing. In this lesson, students will identify cause and effect.

PROCEDURES:

1. Introduce the lesson by telling students the lesson today is about cause and effect. Tell students they have learned that sometimes one thing that happens causes another thing to happen. What happens is called the effect. Why it happens is called the cause. Understanding cause and effect will help you understand what you read. Today, you will learn how to identify if an event is a cause or an effect.
   
2. Go over expectations for the lesson with the students using the CHAMPS visual cards. Tell students this is a no talking time. Hands should be raised to answer questions. Students should be good listeners during this time.
   
3. Show students the chart page with the description of cause and effect and explain. Have students chorally read the descriptions.
   
4. Relate cause and effect to real life situations. Tell students they see examples of cause and effect everyday. Give students examples like the boy had to buy his lunch in the cafeteria because he forgot his lunch. The girl did not miss any on her spelling test because she studied all week. The boy had to pull a ticket because he did not do his homework. Give students the opportunity to share their experiences with cause and effect. Tell students to think about something that has happened and why it happened.
   
5. Show students the chart page with the color-coded cause and effect sentences. Have them identify the cause and the effect and explain. Remind students why something happens is the cause and what happens is the effect. When finished with the example, students will identify cause and effect sentences with no color-coding.
   
6. Tell students they are going to listen to a story using Wiggle Works. Tell students the title of the story, the author, and illustrator. Give students a purpose for listening. Tell them they will be listening to identify cause/effect events in the story. Tell them to think about what is happening in the story and why it is happening. Tell them the author does not always tell the cause. Sometimes they must use their knowledge of their own experiences to figure out possible causes.
   
7. Tell students the expectations have not changed. Give students instructions to sit in front of the computer closest to the television. Students will be sitting in chairs so they can easily see the computer screen. Guide students step by step to access Wiggle Works. Ask students questions during this time.

9. When finished have the students locate events that contain a cause and an effect in the story. Have the students explain the cause and the effect.
   
10. Summarize main points of the lesson. Review the meaning of cause and effect. Ask students if there are any questions about the lesson.
    
11. When finished, explain the cause/effect assessment to the students.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT:

Students are assessed through teacher observations during questioning and locating events with cause and effect in the story. Students are also assessed by the completion of the cause/effect assessment and the student self-assessment.
