Strategy: Compound Words
Objective: Student will recognize compound words. While reading the first chapter student will locate compound words and with prior work on the magnetic board, will be able to tackle the sounding out of these longer words. They will recognize that they are made up of smaller, more familiar words.
Materials: Copies of Buffaloes Before Breakfast for each child. Magnetic cards made from oak tag and markers with magnetic tape.
Procedure:
After the book has been introduced to the group, a lesson begins on combining small words. The cards allow the children to mix and match to create new words. They are allowed to manipulate the cards see how they can form words with meaning.
Reflection:
This will be a mini lesson that will help the student deal with compound words and will carry on beyond the book circle.
