Title - When to Use Articles A/An
By - Sarah Gutekunst
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 4-6

Objective:
Students will know how to appropriately use the articles "a" and "an" in their writing. Also, if given a sentence they can select the appropriate article to be included.

TAKS
§110.6. English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 4.
(4.18) Writing/grammar/usage. The student applies standard grammar and usage to communicate clearly and effectively in writing.

Materials
  • Game board (I just drew one myself and made copies. I put about 15 spaces on the board and had one spot say lose a turn and one say extra turn. I then labeled the start and finish).
  • Playing cards
  • Game pieces of some kind for students to mark their spots on the game board.
Lesson:
    1. Use an overhead to discuss when it is appropriate to use a/an in a sentence.
    2. Do a few sample sentences on the overhead for guided practice.
    3. Explain and model the game students will play
    4. Review behavior expectations for game play
    5. Distribute game.
    6. Collect game and distribute an independent activity to assess knowledge (I usually have them do a worksheet.)

How To Play The Game
    1. Students take turns picking up a card. The student reads the card to the group and decides whether it is appropriate to use a or an in the sentence. He then turns the card over and looks at the answer. If he is right, he can move the number of spaces listed on the cards.
