Title - Thankful For You

Objective:
Students will be able to write similes and metaphors for use in writing.
Supplies needed:
Glue, pencils, construction paper, cooking magazines or pictures of fruits and vegetables, scissors, markers, colored pencils, or crayons.
Lesson:
Hand out the supplies and tell the students to think of their favorite fruit or vegetables. This is great in an ESOL class because students share regional favorites that remind them of their home in another country.
Students draw this fruit or vegetable using most of their sheet of construction paper. Let them choose their color--it depends on the fruit or vegetable they selected; (green for lettuce, red for apple, and yellow for corn). They cut the main shape out and either glue together parts or simply draw and color details.
They write a simile or metaphor comparing themselves to their choices. Example: One of my students cut out a large pea pod filled with four peas. She labeled them naming her three best friends and herself. On the bottom of the pod she wrote, "We are alike as peas in a pod."
Students write their names across the top of their creations in black marker.
Teacher uses brown or tan rolled paper and makes a large cornucopia on top left side of bulletin board (or wall). Write on the cornucopia, "I am Thankful for..."
Then cascade their fruits and vegetables with their names on them coming out of the cornucopia. I usually pin or staple these right on the bulletin board, but I have also taped or glued to a large sheet of paper on an empty wall.
