Title - Reading a Story and Drawing a Picture

Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Art, SS
Grade Level - K
Learning Objectives:
- The student will be able to label their drawing, effectively describing what the picture is saying.
- The student will be able to identify ideas after reading the book, without help of the teacher.
- The student will be able to draw a picture of their family after listening to the reading passage.
List of Materials Needed:
- Book - "My Family is Forever"
- Paper
- Crayons or Markers
- Dry Erase Board
- Expo Markers
Pre-Activity Preparation:
Set up paper and crayons at tables. Write "My family is" on the dry erase board. Have the book read once or twice.
Transition:
Everyone should sit down on the carpet criss-cross applesauce and pay close attention to the story.
Establishing Set/Motivation/Introduction:
"My family is small. My family is loving." "I want to hear about your family, but first let's learn about this young girl's family."
Learning Experiences/Presentation/Procedure:
- Read "My Family is Forever."
- Discuss the book and the character's family.
- Give instructions by explaining that they are drawing a picture of their family.
- Send the students back to their seats to do the activity.
- Show them your example of the picture with the caption "My family is," and explain they must do the same on their paper and finish the sentence.
- Color the drawing.
- Turn it in.
Closure:
"Are all of our families the same? Do we do some different things with our families than others do?"
