Title - Reading a Story and Drawing a Picture

Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Art, SS Grade Level - K

Learning Objectives:
  1. The student will be able to label their drawing, effectively describing what the picture is saying.
  2. The student will be able to identify ideas after reading the book, without help of the teacher.
  3. The student will be able to draw a picture of their family after listening to the reading passage.
List of Materials Needed:
  • Book - "My Family is Forever"
  • Paper
  • Crayons or Markers
  • Dry Erase Board
  • Expo Markers
Pre-Activity Preparation:
    Set up paper and crayons at tables. Write "My family is" on the dry erase board. Have the book read once or twice.
Transition:
    Everyone should sit down on the carpet criss-cross applesauce and pay close attention to the story.
Establishing Set/Motivation/Introduction:
    "My family is small. My family is loving." "I want to hear about your family, but first let's learn about this young girl's family."
Learning Experiences/Presentation/Procedure:
  1. Read "My Family is Forever."
  2. Discuss the book and the character's family.
  3. Give instructions by explaining that they are drawing a picture of their family.
  4. Send the students back to their seats to do the activity.
  5. Show them your example of the picture with the caption "My family is," and explain they must do the same on their paper and finish the sentence.
  6. Color the drawing.
  7. Turn it in.
Closure:
    "Are all of our families the same? Do we do some different things with our families than others do?"
