Sketch To Stretch
by Amanda L. Chivinski
2nd Grade (or all grades)

This lesson can be adapted for any grade level depending on the book you choose to read.

Objectives: The student will be able to:

1.Listen as the story is being read to them.

2.Draw a picture that expresses how the story makes them feel.

3.Explain their drawing to the group.

4.Write a few sentences about what the story means to them.

Materials: paper, pencils, colored pencils or crayons and markers, book of your choice.

Procedure: Read the book to the class. Have the student listen carefully as you read. When you are through with the book, tell the class to draw a picture, without talking to anyone, that shows how the story made them feel. You will get several different responses in drawings to this task. Have students explain their drawings to the class and tell how it represents how the story made them feel. Then have the students write a few sentences about the story or a paragraph about the story. It can be a retelling, a summary, or a paragraph about how the story made them feel.

***This is a good way to get students involved in stories that are read to them on another level of learning!
