Pumpkin Pals
Introduce to the children what a biography is (the life story of a person). Perhaps have some examples of biographies for the children to refer to.
Advise the children they will be creating the biography of a Pumpkin Pal. Brainstorm with the children important ideas they should include in the biography they create.
Children should give the Pumpkin Pal a name, state his age, where he lives, he likes and dislikes etc.
Once they have established these facts, they can begin writing their rough copy. Once rough copy is complete, have students edit work and then pass it on to a peer editor.
Once all editing has been completed, children will write good copy on Pumpkin Pal sheet that can be made by simply adding clip art to a blank page.
Once children have completed the biography, they can create their Pumpkin Pal (the only requirement I have is that they use a pumpkin shape for the head). The children can decorate using construction paper, yarn, felt, material, paper plates, straws virtually anything to create the Pumpkin Pal's body.
I usually hang these up with the biographies attached. The children love going through the hall looking and reading about the Pumpkin Pals they have created.
