Title - When I Grow Up...
By - Melissa McKay
Subject - Language Arts, Art
Grade Level - K-2
Book: When I Grow Up I Want to Be..., by Blaise Douglas, illustrated by Tania Hurt-Newton
(can use any "when I grow up" story)

Read story to students, having them generate ideas about what they would like to be when they grow up. Write the occupations on a chart (blackboard) and give an example with a simple sentence "When I grow up I want to be a _____ because _________."

Follow up: Students can make a Crystal Ball.
Send students to their desks to draw a picture of themselves as what they chose to be when they grow up (picture of him/herself as Astronaut) on a circle of yellow construction paper. They can write the sentence that describes them on the yellow paper (see above sentence "When I grow..). The yellow paper is the crystal ball, to make the stand cut strips of construction paper that can be glued or stapled end to end, creating a ring for the stand. The crystal ball can sit in slits in the stand.

The crystal balls are very visually effective.

This can be modified to suit the abilities of the students. For Kindergarten they can just make a picture, for 1 and 2 they can write a sentence(s).
