Title – Putting Together a Poetry Notebook By – Marna Peck Primary Subject – Language Arts Secondary Subjects – Art, Computers / Internet Grade Level – 6-8 grade This project can be introduced at the beginning of an extensive poetry unit where the notebook would be the culmination of that unit. It should also include minimum requirements as far as illustrations, decorations, etc. Goal: Students will be able to recognize different types of poetry and use and recognize different poetry terms. Objective: Students will organize their work in a creative way for oral presentation and public display. Procedure: During the poetry unit, students should collect the following information: 1. Definitions of poetry terms such as simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, alliteration, imagery, etc. Materials: Construction paper, markers, colored pencils, white and colored computer paper, glitter, yarn, buttons, beads, ribbon, or anything else you might want to allow the students to use to decorate their notebooks (If you do not want to deal with all the mess that comes with illustrating and decorating and you have access to a computer lab, students could complete the assignment on Microsoft Word using Word Art or Clip Art for the illustrations.) Assessment: The poetry notebook can be scored on a rubric with a top score indicating the student has included all the required elements and has presented them in a creative way.
