Title - Alphabetical War (a card game)
By - Prairiegirl
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 2 -12

This is a fun card game used to put words in alphabetical order. Can be used for most grades since you supply the words.

Teacher Preparations:

Make a deck of cards with one word per card. Can use vocabulary words, spelling words, unit and theme words, or just words out of the dictionary.
Note from LessonsPlansPage.Com: Prairiegirl has made a clever PowerPoint which allows you to easily print two cards per page with a colorful background on their other side. You can e-mail her for the PowerPoint file or you can just make the cards yourself. You could get really fancy or you could just print the words on index cards, or even regular paper cut in half twice to yield four cards. Any even number of cards will work, but Prariegirl uses a regular size deck.
    PowerPoint Instructions
(Skip if you will be making the cards yourself.)

E-mail me for my PowerPoint file.

Select slides 3-10 for the back of the playing cards, or you can choose a background of your own.

Print 27 copies of your selected background.

Put your printed copies back into the printer, but put them in upside down, (so the faces of the cards print on the opposite side.)

Slides 6-32 are the face of the playing cards.

Edit the text box on each card to put your words in. Can use vocabulary words, spelling words, unit and theme words, or just words out of the dictionary.

Print slides 11-32. The faces should print on the back sides of the backgrounds.

      Cut out your cards.
How to Play:

This is a game for two players, or for a team of two, with one person being the card holder.

Deal the cards evenly between the two players, or the two cardholders if playing in a team.

The person or team that has the word on the card that comes first alphabetically wins the hand and collects the card in a pile.

The person or team with the most cards collected in the winner. (Just like in the game of War.)
