Teacher’s Materials

  • The book

One fish, Two fish, Red fish, Blue fish

    by Dr. Seuss
  • Smart board
  • PowerPoint presentation

Introduction

(Begin PowerPoint.) Let’s begin by reading some fun facts about fish. How many of you have pet fish at home? Have any of you read Dr. Seuss’ book about fish? It’s called

One fish, Two fish, Red fish, Blue fish

and there are lots of rhyming words in this book. Does anyone know what rhyming is? (Give students time to answer. It is when words end with the same sound.)

Transition

As I read this story, I want you to be listening for words that end with -ad, -op, -ish, -ump, and -ink. Here is an example of what I’m looking for. (Show the beginning of the story with highlighted words.) Now here are the endings I am looking for. (Point to the five endings written on the smart board.) As I read the story I want you to write on your worksheet the words with those endings and when I am done reading we will take it up.

Sequence of Activities

Okay, now everyone be quiet and listen to the story so that you can here as many words with these endings. (Point to the board as you say this. Begin reading story in a loud clear voice and have the book towards the students so that they can see the pictures as you read.) Can any one tell me some words that you heard me read that have these endings? Tell me the letters that need to be added to these endings to make the word complete. (Wait for answers. If they can’t remember, help them out with some. When they say a word, ask them to find the proper heading on the board and write it in for them.) Very good! I can tell that you all were listening as I read the story.

Closure

At this time we are going to review the words that are on the chart we just made. We will read the words aloud and spell them together. Do you all see these words all over the place here? (Wait for response.) We are going to find two words that have the same ending such as fat and cat and a volunteer will come to the board and circle them for us. (Call on volunteers when they raise their hands.)

Evaluation

(Evaluation will be done when the students are recalling words from the story for the phonogram chart. The students can also be evaluated when they are matching words with the same endings.)
