Learning Objectives:


After the lesson, the student will be able to:

  1. identify what a verb is
  2. give examples of verbs
  3. recognize how to act out verbs in charades


List of Materials Needed:

  1. book/story
  2. index cards
  3. pencils


Pre-Activity Preparation:

    Read the story and make sure the kids know what a verb is.

Transition:

    Divide class into two teams.

Establishing Set/Motivation/Introduction:

  1. Review the story.
  2. Ask if the kids have ever played charades.
  3. Explain how the game will be played.


Learning Experiences/Procedure:

  1. Divide group into two teams.
  2. Divide story into two sections and assign one section to each team.
  3. Give each team ten cards.
  4. Each person will pick one verb from their section and write it on the card.
  5. Shuffle cards from both teams and place them face down.
  6. Have each team roll dice to see who goes first.
  7. The “acting” team takes a card. One member of the team pantomimes the verb.
  8. To ensure that each student gets a turn, we will go in a clockwise rotation starting with the oldest person.
  9. The “guessing” team tries to guess the verb being mimed.
  10. Team members write their guesses on a paper that the other team checks.
  11. When the guessing team has guessed the word correctly or has made five wrong guesses, the teams switch roles.


Closure:

    Ask your kids what a verb is again and call on a few of the kids to give examples of verbs not used in the story.
