Title - Action Verb Charades

Learning Objectives:
After the lesson, the student will be able to:
- identify what a verb is
- give examples of verbs
- recognize how to act out verbs in charades
List of Materials Needed:
- book/story
- index cards
- pencils
Pre-Activity Preparation:
Read the story and make sure the kids know what a verb is.
Transition:
Divide class into two teams.
Establishing Set/Motivation/Introduction:
- Review the story.
- Ask if the kids have ever played charades.
- Explain how the game will be played.
Learning Experiences/Procedure:
- Divide group into two teams.
- Divide story into two sections and assign one section to each team.
- Give each team ten cards.
- Each person will pick one verb from their section and write it on the card.
- Shuffle cards from both teams and place them face down.
- Have each team roll dice to see who goes first.
- The "acting" team takes a card. One member of the team pantomimes the verb.
- To ensure that each student gets a turn, we will go in a clockwise rotation starting with the oldest person.
- The "guessing" team tries to guess the verb being mimed.
- Team members write their guesses on a paper that the other team checks.
- When the guessing team has guessed the word correctly or has made five wrong guesses, the teams switch roles.
Closure:
Ask your kids what a verb is again and call on a few of the kids to give examples of verbs not used in the story.
