Required Materials (for each student):
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):
-
According to
The American Heritage Dictionary
, the definition of
hero worship is “intense or excessive admiration for a hero or a person regarded as a hero.
”
-
Discuss with students the difference between hero worship and having a personal hero. For example, many students look up to professional athletes. Some athletes let down their admirers by exhibiting bad behaviors. Students will still idolize these athletes despite their bad examples.
-
Personal heroes are people that we personally know in our lives and look up to.
Ask students about the person in their life that shows good judgment, leadership skills and other admirable qualities.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
-
Introduce the concept of hero worship to students. Discuss how celebrities may not be good heroes. Discuss personal heroes and the difference that they make in the lives of students.
-
Students will be using Photo Story 3 for Windows to create a 30 second commercial for their personal hero.
Students should already have a basic understanding of how to work the program. A good tutorial can be found at:
http://millie.furman.edu/mll/tutorials/photostory3/index.htm
from Furman University
-
Students will meet their deadline, turn in their commercial and then view the commercials of other students.
-
Discuss the commercials and how thoughts about hero worship may have changed. Also discuss the qualities of personal heroes and how they make better role models and leaders.
Plan for Independent Practice:
Students will individually create their personal hero commercials.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):
-
Each student’s commercial will be played after the assignment deadline.
-
Students will watch the commercials of one another and give constructive criticism regarding their technical work.
-
Students will also discuss the personal hero of each commercial and how that hero is portrayed.
