Title - My Family Newsletter
By - Erica Lynn Witherell
Primary Subject - Computers / Internet
Grade Level - 5th - 7th grade

Goals: Students will be able to -
  • Use vocabulary below.
  • Change the wrapping of graphics in a document
  • Create borders around text
  • Shade the area inside a border
  • Create columns within a document
Vocabulary:
  • formatting
  • border
  • layout
  • text wrapping
  • shading
  • columns
  • ClipArt
  • Text box
  • resizing
  • font
  • bullets
  • line spacing
Materials:
  • A computer set-up with MS WORD.
Procedure:

Day One
  • Have the class log on and launch MS WORD.
  • Discuss the kinds of things that could go in a newsletter (announcements, updates, general information, jokes, scripture, graphics, etc.) The information for this project should revolve around their families, so as a class, brainstorm on what kind of subtopics would be appropriate. Have the students type the list as the class creates it (List on whiteboard). This should be printed out for homework use.
  • Homework: Work on topics they want to include. They should be thinking about what they would want to put in their newsletter. The printout is for their use only.
Day Two
  • The class should have their printouts with them.
  • Have the students type in a title for their newsletter. Let them be creative and think up neat titles like Witherell's Weekly or The Holsapple How'dya'do. Have the students go down a line and add the by-line (by then their full names.) They should have it centered.
  • Demonstrate/review how to (and allow them time to) create a border around this, as well as allowing them to choose the border style and thickness they want.
  • Demonstrate how to add shading to the now bordered text. Allow a few minutes.
  • Allow some time for the class to start typing in the content of their newsletter. The graphics and such come after the text has been typed.
  • Have them save their work, exit WORD and log off the computer.
Days Three-Four
  • Work on typing the content of their newsletter. Show the class how to use bullets and numbering. They can use them to list items such as birthdays or events.
  • After they finish typing, review how to create columns. They should have at least two columns somewhere in their newsletter. (The entire newsletter does not have to be in columns.)
  • Review how to add graphics from the clip-art and use the text wrapping/layout feature to wrap the text either square or tight. Have them add a few graphics that correspond to the newsletter. In addition they may also use textboxes to emphasis items of interest, scripture, etc. Changing the layout and wrapping is the same for textboxes as it is for graphics.
  • Show them how to add a page border and let them pick one that goes with the newsletter.
  • They are to save their work and print out one copy.
  • Have them exit WORD and log off the computer.
  • The above vocabulary will be continuously reviewed throughout the entire lesson.
