Thanksgiving Acrostic

Printable Version for your convenience!

Title - Thanksgiving Acrostic
By - Donna
Primary Subject - Computers / Internet
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts, Computers / Internet
Grade Level - 5-7

Prior knowledge:
How to use MS Word, WordArt, and Clip Art
Procedure:
  • Discuss what an Acrostic is:
A poem or series of lines in which certain letters, usually the first in each line, form a name, motto, or message when read in sequence. In other words, it "explains" the word being used.

  • Discuss with students words that are associated with "Thanksgiving."
At least one boy will choose football and sometimes the list gets out of hand. You may want to give them a list of words from which to choose and exclude anything that you do not want used. If you choose "pie" you need to add something to it, like "pecan", "pumpkin" or "mince" because it the word needs to have more than 4 letters.

  • Students must use WordArt for the title.

  • Acrostic word must be vertical.
The letters of the word need to be larger and in a different font so they are easily read going "down". I have had students put the word on the page and then move over and center the acrostic, but mostly they just take the first letter and use a different font to continue to explain the word.

  • More than one word may be come after each letter.

Example:

P Pumpkins while
K Keeping up

N New Season of Autumn

The preceeding is a LessonPlansPage.com approximation of what the author intended.

Note:
Of course you can always change this for any season and do it for any words. But it's always nice to have some things to display in the hallway for the Holiday seasons!
